چکیده

We describe the spectra and pseudospectra of continuous time and discrete time waveform relaxation operators. Since the spectrum of the finite-interval waveform relaxation operator is only a singleton, the spectrum of the infinite-interval operator is typically used to describe the behavior of waveform relaxation algorithms. Here, we show that the pseudospectrum is a more useful tool for analyzing convergence of waveform iterations on finite intervals and prove that the pseudospectrumof the infinite-interval operator is in fact the limit of the pseudospectrum of the finite-interval operator.

Complexity Issues in Computing Spectra, Pseudospectra and Resolvents

We display methods that allow for computations of spectra, pseudospectra and resolvents of linear operators on Hilbert spaces and also elements in unital Banach algebras. The paper considers two different approaches, namely, pseudospectral techniques and polynomial numerical hull theory. The former is used for Hilbert space operators whereas the latter can handle the general case of elements in...

On the computation of spectra and pseudospectra of self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators

We consider the long standing open question on whether one can actually compute spectra and pseudospectra of arbitrary (possibly non-self-adjoint) Schrödinger operators. We conclude that the answer is affirmative for “almost all” such operators, meaning that the operators must satisfy rather weak conditions such as the spectrum cannot be empty nor the whole plane. We include algorithms for the g...

On the Approximation of Spectra and Pseudospectra of Linear Operators on Hilbert Spaces

We present several new techniques for approximating spectra and pseudospectra of linear operators (not necessarily bounded) on a separable Hilbert space. This includes new results on the finite section method (and some variants of it) as well a generalization of the QR algorithm to infinite dimensions. In order to approximate spectra of arbitrary closed operators we introduce a generalization o...

Norms of Inverses, Spectra, and Pseudospectra of Large Truncated Wiener-Hopf Operators and Toeplitz Matrices

This paper is concerned with Wiener-Hopf integral operators on Lp and with Toeplitz operators (or matrices) on lp. The symbols of the operators are assumed to be continuous matrix functions. It is well known that the invertibility of the operator itself and of its associated operator imply the invertibility of all sufficiently large truncations and the uniform boundedness of the norms of their ...
